MakerBot is an open source 3D Printer that brings manufacturing to the masses through an affordable and easy-to-assemble personal factory, which makes things using ABS plastic. MakerBot Industries is a Brooklyn-based company founded in 2009 by Bre Pettis, Adam Mayer and Zach Smith, which produces an open source 3D printer rapid prototyping machine called the Cupcake CNC. The machines can be purchased fully-assembled or in do it yourself kits. The company has an online community called Thingiverse, where users can post files, document their designs, and collaborate on opensource hardware.
